The United Democratic Movement (UDM) is the latest political party to agree to join the Government of National Unity (GNU). In a letter to the Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC), Fikile Mbalula, party leader Bantu Holomisa said the party would accept the ruling party's invitation to join the GNU.
Following last month's general election, which failed to produce a majority for any party to form a government, several smaller parties, including the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), have aligned with the ANC.
Earlier this week, PAC also joined GNU.
Notably, the party was part of a group of parties that voiced opposition to the unity government last week under the banner of the Progressive Parliamentary Group.
The Progressive Caucus currently includes the EFF, Al Jamaah Ahmed and the Coalition for African Transformation.
PAC secretary-general Apa Pu said joining the GNU was based on the belief that “the PAC can effectively steer the country away from right-wing tendencies and safeguard the gains that have been made so far.”
Poo added that the PAC believes that joining the GNU will bring the issue of land restoration into the spotlight.
