pretoria – The first Uganda-South Africa Trade, Tourism and Investment Summit opens on Monday (today) in Pretoria, South Africa.
The summit, which ends on Wednesday, is expected to be attended by 300 public and private sector representatives, including the business community, heads of government agencies and policy makers, according to the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA).
UIA said the summit will provide a platform for the private sector, government and corporate regulators to exchange views, ideas and information on how to promote investment, as well as identify existing business and investment opportunities in Uganda. Ta.
Sectors to be discussed at the summit include tourism, trade and investment, finance, insurance, professional services, manufacturing, mining, energy resources, agro-processing, ICT, power generation, education and infrastructure development.
The summit will be hosted by the Uganda High Commission in South Africa in collaboration with the Uganda Private Foundation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Cooperatives, and will be attended by the leaders of both countries, President Yoweri Museveni and President Cyril Ramaphosa. .
Addressing the press at the Uganda Media Center in early February, Uganda's High Commissioner to South Africa, Paul Amol, said that Ugandans will benefit from the summit through business-to-business meetings that will help them understand the realities of business-to-business business. “The free movement of goods and people between our countries will empower our people and bring more money into the economy, which is currently at $50 billion compared to $420 billion in the South. The GDP of countries in Africa will also grow,'' Amol explained.
Executive Director of the Private Sector Foundation Uganda, Stephen Asimwe, added after the meeting that the business community will work with South African private companies to have continued discussions towards increasing Uganda's exports to South Africa. .
According to the UN COMTRADE database on international trade, Uganda's exports to South Africa in 2020 were $11.41 million.
