Betrayed promises: understanding South Africa's political crisis
Join us for a conversation hosted by the Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU), the Faculty of Commerce and Law at the University of Cape Town, and the Center for Complex Systems in Transition at Stellenbosch University.
South Africa's political crisis is not just the takeover of the country by a corrupt elite. A recently published study, “Betrayal of Promises: How South Africa is Being Stolen,” shows that a neo-patriarchal system of governance has emerged, based on a highly unstable symbiosis between a constitutional state and an emerging shadow state. It is clear that Professor Haroon Borat (Director of DPRU) chaired the dialogue, with panellists drawn from the National Capacity Research Group, co-authors of the #BetrayalReport, the most comprehensive report ever undertaken on the Zuma dynamics and political crisis. He is responsible for compiling empirical analysis. guided state.
Guest speakers: Professor Mark Swilling (Co-Director, CST), Dr. Tavi Leoka (Argon Asset Management Economic Strategist), Mr. Sikrekil Douma (Researcher, CST), Constitutional expert Professor Pierre de Vos (UCT Faculty of Public Law) , as a respondent.
