South Africa's political crisis is not just the takeover of the country by a corrupt elite. A recently published study, “Betrayal of Promises: How South Africa is Being Stolen,” shows that a neo-patriarchal system of governance has emerged, based on a highly unstable symbiosis between a constitutional state and an emerging shadow state. It is clear that Professor Haroon Borat (Director of DPRU) chaired the dialogue, with panellists drawn from the National Capacity Research Group, co-authors of the #BetrayalReport, the most comprehensive report ever undertaken on the Zuma dynamics and political crisis.
