Three people, including a student, were shot dead in broad daylight in Braamfontein on Thursday afternoon, including a student caught in crossfire.
Police say an unknown gunman opened fire on two men sitting in a parked vehicle on Thursday afternoon. Both occupants died.
During the shootout, a bus carrying university students was caught in crossfire.
Police spokesperson Col. Dimakatso Nebhluwi said two students were also shot dead.
One of them was confirmed dead, and the other was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“The motive for the shooting is the subject of police investigation and charges of murder and attempted murder have been filed. No one has been arrested,” Nebhluwi said.
Wits University said in a notice to students and staff that it was aware of the shooting incident, possibly related to taxi violence.
“There were no injuries to Wits students or staff… At this stage the university is doing its best to support emergency services and police at the scene.”
Jorissen Street between Station Street and Bertha Street has been closed to traffic.
Bertha Street was also closed between Decollete Street and Eimshof Street.
Police are asking anyone who can help investigate or track down the suspect to contact them.
