Social media users were unimpressed with the appearance of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester when he appeared in the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein on Wednesday, February 21.
Ms Bester and her boyfriend, Dr Nandipha Magdumana, appeared in court along with seven other co-accused in connection with the brazen escape from Mangan Correctional Center in May 2022.
'Too healthy and clean' for a prisoner
A video was shared on social media showing Bester, who appeared to be healthy and happy, being pulled from his cell. In one clip, he interacts with one of his co-accused, Zanda Moyo.

During the legal proceedings, Bester's lawyer, Mohamed Seed At, raised questions about the meals Bester, who is undergoing chronic treatment for diabetes, was being provided.
“The problem is not that he wants food or your worship. The problem is that if he did eat, my client is diabetic and the food served to him would cause his blood sugar levels to spike. . They didn't take that into account, but if they had, they would have given him a diet appropriate for a diabetic,” Seed said.
“He has medication that he needs to take, but unfortunately he cannot take it as he has not had any food so far. refused.

Bester also accused corrections officers of choosing what he wore to court. He also said he was denied telephone calls and access to legal representatives while in prison.
In response, Judge Joseph Murambi advised Seedat to take these matters to the relevant authorities, adding that the telephone issue was serious.
The pre-trial hearing was adjourned to June 5.
