Virgin Active continues to face backlash following an incident in which a “man” was spotted in a women-only area. This comes as the gym has introduced a new 'inclusive environment' where transgender gym users can choose a changing room that matches their 'gender identity'.
The company, founded by British businessman Richard Branson, has threatened to cancel its membership amid the incident and has faced public criticism.
Anger as a “man” discovered in a women’s area
On the X app, Virgin Active members have shared their safety concerns following alarming reports.
@FreeInduna Tweet: “Second report of a man in the women's steam room at Virgin Active Claremont. Bit out and all. If you witness it, please do not report it to staff. Report indecent assault to police. please.”
The tweet added, “Grandma called the front desk and was ignored.”
In its response, Virgin Active insisted it had been in touch with those affected and was treating the incident as a “matter of urgency”.
X's official account also said: “Please feel free to report this to the police. However, it is equally essential that you inform the club's team immediately so that we can deal with this matter with the urgency it deserves. ”
VIRGIN ACTIVE lets transgender people “choose” their changing rooms
In response, Virgin Active introduced its “inclusive environment” to its members. This means transgender members will be allowed to use areas that are “consistent with their gender identity.”
“Virgin Active does not at any time allow male members access to women-only spaces such as changing rooms,” the company said in a statement.
“However, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all members feel valued and respected.
“We fully support our members who transition and update their identification documents to align with their gender identity.
“As a result, they are granted access to changing rooms according to their gender identity, in accordance with the principles of inclusion and dignity.”
Documents and medical records will be required
When asked how it would determine “fully transitioned” status, Virgin Active said: “We require further criteria to ensure the process is complete.”
This includes “required supporting documentation, and medical records as appropriate.”
Virgin Active also advised affected members to use family changing rooms and specialist facilities to “ensure a comfortable environment for everyone”.
All concerns will also be reported to the manager.
It added: “We are committed to upholding the principles of inclusion and dignity for all of our members.”
