Wayne Rooney says he aims to return to management as soon as possible to fulfill his dream of becoming Manchester United or Everton manager.
The former United and Everton striker was sacked by Championship side Birmingham in January after an 83-day spell.
Rooney previously managed Derby County and MLS side DC United.
“Managing Manchester United or Everton is the goal, these big jobs are where you want to get to,” the former England captain said on Match of the Day.
Rooney, 38, added: “But it's a process. You have to go through stages and get yourself back on track.”
He said this while working as a commentator for United's FA Cup game at Nottingham Forest. “I definitely want to return to a management position in the next 10 years. If possible, I'd like to be in a position in one of the top leagues.'' It's a big job. ”
Rooney was appointed as Birmingham manager on October 11 following the controversial sacking of manager John Eustace at Blues, who were sixth in the Championship.
Under the former forward, the team lost nine of 15 games and dropped to 20th in the standings.
Rooney was sacked after a 3-0 defeat against Leeds United on 2 January.
“I definitely want to get back into management. What happened in Birmingham was a setback, but I'm a fighter and I want to get back into management,” he said.
“If you're a manager, you'll understand. [being sacked] It's part of the job and there will be setbacks. The key is how to recover.
“Now that I have had time to think about it, I will make sure to do it right next time.”
