In a recent interview, Benny McCarthy reflected on his bond with Keenan “AKA”, aka Forbes, and said the late rap artist was the only person who convinced him to get back into music.
“The closest person to remotely getting me back into music or anything was the late AKA,” South Africa's all-time leading scorer said in an interview on 5FM's Breakfast Show this week.
“He was a really special person. He and I had a bond and we always kept in touch,” McCarthy said.
'AKA' and his friend, celebrity chef Thebelo 'Tiz' Motsoane, were shot and killed outside a Durban nightclub in KwaZulu-Natal in early 2023.
McCarthy said she was shocked by the news of the rapper's death. “When I found out what happened, I was completely devastated.” [sic] It happened,” he said.
At the time of AKA's death, the former Porto striker was based in England and working as an assistant coach at Premier League club Manchester United.

Following AKA's death, the club he supported, Manchester United, paid tribute to him in their matchday program.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of South African rapper and United supporter Keenan Forbes (aka AKA). He was a huge red player who was greatly admired by many. ” declared a memo in the game day booklet.
McCarthy also captioned a photo with AKA with a message of condolence to the Forbes family.
on his last album mass countryabout the song Mbuzi Alias featuring Zato Soul played a clip of McCarthy concluding the interview on Robert Marawa's radio show. The word “Mbuzi” translates to mean goat.
The latter is used as an acronym for “Greatest Of All Time.” By placing this clip at the beginning of the song, it was as if AKA was paying homage to McCarthy and Marawa as goats and as they were seen on his field as well.
