The announcement has been made for years and is finally coming in just a few days. By Sunday afternoon, we'll know whether Dallas will host the World Cup finals.
There are already multiple unconfirmed reports that we will be approved, and the impact cannot be overstated. When it comes to the World Cup, all signs point to Frisco playing a key role.
“This is a huge deal,” Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney said. “We have a football hall of fame here and of course the Hunt family's FC Dallas, so we'd love to have a team here and be a major player in that.”
Frisco was one of Dallas' partner cities in its World Cup bid. Cheney said businesses hundreds of miles around could benefit if Dallas reaches the finals.
“They say it's the equivalent of eight Super Bowls,” Cheney said.
Soccer City in Frisco is within walking distance of Toyota Stadium, home of FC Dallas.
“You can't quantify that. It's a dream,” said owner James Stiglets.
Stiglets sells everything related to soccer, from cleats to jerseys, and when it comes to the World Cup, he says, “You only get to play the final in your hometown once in a lifetime.''
AT&T Stadium will be the main venue for the 48-team World Cup tournament. We found out about that when Dallas was chosen as one of 16 host cities in 3 countries.
“Where the final is held will determine how the World Cup will be known,” Stiglets said. “This will be remembered forever.”
With the announcement just days away, North Texas is gearing up for the big reveal.
Sunday's final game announcement will be made at 2:00 PM CST and will be broadcast live on NBC5's sister station Telemundo 39.
