Woolworths is immediately recalling its peanut butter ice cream brand due to potential health risks and asking customers who purchased the product to return it to their local store for a full refund.
The JSE-listed retailer said on Friday that its Woolworths Peanut Butter Ice Cream products contained over legal levels of naturally occurring aflatoxin, which can be dangerous to humans. – Announced a brand recall.
Woolworths said the recall only applies to peanut butter dairy ice cream sold under the Woolworths brand. All other products containing peanut butter remained “100% safe for consumption,” including proprietary spreads.
Woolworths has announced that it has tested a range of South African peanut butter products after it was found to contain aflatoxin in excess of regulatory limits.

Woolworths' peanut butter has been found to be safe for consumption, but following the initial recall by other companies in the industry, we have decided to systematically evaluate all related products as a precautionary measure. These products include biscuits, sauces, pretzels, energy bars, and ice cream.
Mr Woolworths added that aflatoxin would need to be ingested in “very large quantities to be toxic to humans”.
