Like many disgruntled South Africans, Zakes Bantwini shared his unfortunate experience with insurance company Old Mutual.
The Grammy Award winner said his family was paid a meager salary after his mother passed away in 2007.
The company was a trending topic this week after one X user claimed it “refuses” to pay despite taking legal action.
Old Man Mutual: What happened?
Earlier this week, Seba Molefi, who uses the X handle @seba_s_m, tagged Old Mutual in a tweet that read: “Please tell me why you refuse to release my mother's money despite a court order.'' You are in contempt of court. ”
After being dragged online by other X users with similar experiences, Old Mutual responded with a statement on Friday, March 8th.
The company claimed that Molefi's parents had “violated relevant laws” when requesting payment, and that they would “consult with their legal representatives and, if necessary, sue in court” to resolve the issue.
This comment added fuel to the drama online. Many South Africans threatened to cancel their insurance policies and take their money elsewhere.
Old Mutual issued a second statement on Saturday, insisting that the matter was a “sensitive matter” and that it “could not engage publicly.”
Sachs Bantuni shares his experience
In response to Kaya FM presenter Sizwe Dhlomo who admonished Old Mutual for its negative coverage, Zakes Bantwini shared his experience.
“I will only receive R380 as payment for my mother's life insurance from Old Mutual,” he wrote on Twitter.
One tweet asked him if he was talking about R380,000 (R380 000) and he replied: “Same as R380.00.”
Needless to say, many tweets were shocked by the celebrity's revelation.
@Evidence_Shongw: “Even celebrities are being robbed of their money by this organization.”
@RichmanSekatane: “Did you suffer in silence too? Zakes, you're a celebrity, mind you.”
@zigzag231: “Zaix was scammed…Grammy award winner walked away with R380!”
Zakes' mother, Nomthandazo Madida, passed away in 2007 after a battle with cancer.
The Grammy-winning singer has posted several touching tributes to her mother, calling her her “biggest supporter.”
